Goa's first woman Member of Legislative Assembly passes away

Urminda Da Lima Leitao, the first woman member of the legislative assembly (MLA) in the State, passed away in a hospital at Vasco on Saturday afternoon at the age of 84.
Speaking to reporters, Dr Baban Parulekar, a friend and the family physician, said Leitao passed away due to old age.
“She was admitted in my hospital since the last five days and passed away of old age in the noon,” said Dr Parulekar.
The first woman legislator in the State, Leitao was elected on the United Goans Party ticket and represented Mormugao constituency from 1962 to 1967. She is survived by four daughters, one son and 13 grandchildren.
The funeral cortege will leave the Leitao residence at Vaddem-Vasco to the St Andrew’s Church, Vasco, on Monday at 3.45 pm, where a Mass will be celebrated before the body is laid to rest. This is the second tragedy to have hit the Leitao family within a gap of barely six months, following the untimely demise of Urminda’s son and noted football commentator, Noel Da Lima, who died in Kolkata.
